Shows in Support of Bones
2002 or thereabouts: there were others, earlier,
but we forget just when
I actually had copies of Bones
for quite a while before I had an offical party for it at the Bowery
Poetry Club, just before I left New York, so in some way all of
these shows were an informal tour for that record. The very earliest
shows were almost all in New York, the first at the Lounge (formerly
the Darkstar), the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and then at Bar 13. I was
terrifed at all of them, but learned a great deal. At that point,
in 2000 and 2001 I played lots of places, including the Cornelia
Street Cafe, the Carroll Park Music Fest, and the Old Stone House,
as well as countless open mikes. I will not forget my first open
mike, because it was at the Fast Folk Cafe, and I was so scared
that my voice stopped in the middle of my first song. I started
over.

One Arm Red
Somewhere in Dubmo. I played this show, and was so not about playing
shows right about that moment that I never announced it, but here
it is, for the record, and I enjoyed. The photo at the top of the
page (D. Miles again) is actually from that night.

No joke, kids. My friend Dan Washburn has come through big-time
-- not only is he putting me up in China for two weeks, but he's
orchestrated my first international gig. I may also be playing at
a place called O'Malley's (yes, they have Irish pubs even in China)
on either the 7th or 15th. If you're in the area, know someone in
the area, or have good relations with members of the Chinese Politburo,
feel free to come by or help promote...

Meow Mix
w/Pamela Means and Vanida Gail
269 E. Houston Street at Suffolk (between Avenues A-B)
(212) 254-0688
8-10 p.m.*, $5 cover
I'm pretty psyched to be playing with Pamela Means (check out www.pamelameans.com)
so I hope you'll come out for this one. This is lesbian bar, but
for the guys out there who are worried about it, like Rubyfruit,
this place is also guy-friendly as long as you're not a prick. Their
Web site (www.meowmixchix.com) has a neat history of the place and
suggests bringing your ID, so don't forget it. You know the scene
in Chasing Amy at the bar? This was the place. But don't expect
me to be as hot as the girl in the movie.
* I don't know what order we'll be playing in, but you'll want to
see both of these ladies play so be there the whole time. I know
I will!
